VALUES - What i believe

PERSONAL VALUES

For any conversation about school board service, children should always be centered.

A guiding principle in how I believe we need to approach education comes from former Lucy Laney Elementary School principal, Mauri Melander Friestleben: “Anytime anybody sees a child that looks forlorn, lost, not taken care of — spread your arms, scoop them up, ask questions later, but love them first.”

I believe in building bridges between people and finding common ground, emphasizing what we agree on rather than what we disagree on.

I was raised in a family where we were taught to help out where we could and leave things better than we found them. Because I've been a full time "stay-at-home" mom and part-time paid employee, I've been able to volunteer my time in the community. One of the greatest joys in my life is to be able to be of service to others.

educational values

  • ALL children deserve a high quality education.
  • Nurture children to develop a love of learning that will carry them through their lives.
  • Equip children to think critically.
  • Prepare students to value different people & points of view.
  • Teach the value of tolerance, acceptance & understanding of all people.
  • Teach kids to be good citizens with historical perspective & civics knowledge.
  • Partner with parents & guardians in their student's educational journey.

district CONCERNS/Challenges

  • Ongoing need to support children in the area of mental health
  • Continued lack of economic aid from state government
  • Continue to operate our school district in a fiscally responsible manner - Highest Bond Rating of Aa1 because of excellent financial management
  • Further discussion about declining enrollment & its impact on finances
  • Retention of high quality teachers & support staff that make Hudson a top school district in the state
  • Keep test scores high and to help the sometimes forgotten "middle" to rise up to the next level.
